Energy Storage System

Alstom provides onboard energy storage products and services as sustainable retrofit solutions replacing, or combined with, diesel traction. Refurbishing trains during scheduled overhauls, these solutions improve the existing fleet and avoid costly electrification upgrades.
The onboard battery energy storage system is installed as an additional package and can fit any type if rolling stock including locomotives, light-rail vehicles, regional and commuter trains.

    VMS RE6 Chemnitz-Leipzig, Germany

VMS operator ordered 11 trains with 10-year maintenance in February 2020 with the support of ZVNL. Trains will be operated between Chemnitz and Leipzig from December 2023. After electrification of the line the trains will be operated as pure EMUs.

  • AGC dual mode train converted to BEMU power by Mitrac B™

AGC dual mode train converted to BEMU power by Mitrac B™

One of our first sustainable mobility solutions was a dual mode Autorail à Grande Capacité (AGC) train, being the world's first hybrid train when it entered service in 2007. In January 2021, we signed a new contract to retrofit and introduce a pre series of five AGC battery operated trains by 2023, in collaboration with SNCF Voyageurs and five French regions.

Together, we will modify existing AGC trains into battery operated trains to help decarbonise French rail transport. The idea is to convert dual mode (catenary and diesel powered) high-capacity self-propelled trains to dual mode battery powered AGCs.

    Coradia iLINT FCMU for LNVG

Alstom's innovative hydrogen train project Coradia iLint, commissioned by Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG), has been honoured with the 2021 European Railway Award.
Alstom, together with its partners, has proven with the project that hydrogen propulsion is a reliable and emission-free alternative to diesel-powered regional trains on non-electrified lines.
The first hydrogen-powered series trains are in regular service in Germany since 2022.

    FNM HMU

Ferrovie Nord Milano ordered 6 trains in November 2020 for Sebino and Valcamonica. Based on Coradia Stream platform, the FCMU will ensure the same comfort level as EMU version and the same operational performance as diesel trains with 800-1,000 km of fuel cell autonomy.
